April fools

Happy April Fools, (4 days late). I planned on blogging that day, but we were still wading through mounds of laundry from our latest trip (yes we went on another one!) I love April fools day, my little family loves to think of things we can prank each other with each year. My running joke with my husband was that each year I would tell him that I was pregnant, and each year he fell for it. Well 5 years ago the joke was on me because I actually found out that day that I was pregnant with my youngest. Needless to say, knowing he was our last, my hubby went and had the surgery and I have been unable to prank him that way since. But I still have a fun tradition of making a prankster meal. I originally got the idea HERE. We have made the fake chicken nuggets, fake carrots and peas (although the kids weren’t fooled for a minute) The the fake lemonade, and fake cupcakes.

This year’s menu was pretend meatloaf, mashed potatoes, gravy and green beans. The trick is to then make the real thing as well. To make the “fake stuff” I made chocolate rice crispy treats and formed them into a loaf pan. Then I scooped vanilla ice cream topped with butterscotch caramel (for the mashed potatoes and gravy you could feasibly use a yellow starburst for a pat of butter, but I didn’t bother. Then for the green beans, I took the green part of multi colored fruit roll ups and rolled them up, then using a pizza cutter cut the ends, and they looked like the green beans. The kids actually thought I had given them the real thing!
